The Sikorsky HH-3F Pelican was a powerful workhorse for the U.S. Coast Guard, serving as their primary long-range search and rescue helicopter from 1967 until it was phased out in the 1990s. This twin-turbine, amphibious, all-weather aircraft significantly extended the Coast Guard's offshore search and rescue capabilities. One of its most distinctive features was its ability to land on water, which was especially useful in rescue situations where a hoist could not be used. The Pelican's crew of four, along with its rescue hoist and spacious cabin, enabled it to perform a wide variety of missions, including medical evacuations, logistical support, and law enforcement. During its tenure, the HH-3F fleet was credited with saving more than 23,000 lives.

Beyond its role as a lifesaver, the HH-3F Pelican was also a highly versatile aircraft used in many other capacities. Its rear ramp, which could be opened in flight or on the water, allowed for the transport of cargo and personnel, making it well-suited for missions such as marine environmental protection and drug interdiction. The helicopter's robust design and all-weather capabilities made it a dependable asset in some of the most challenging conditions. The Pelican was eventually replaced by the non-amphibious HH-60J Jayhawk, but its legacy of service and its unique amphibious design mark it as a significant aircraft in Coast Guard history.
