Farewell to the Falcon
Command giclee' print for Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod. Limited Edition.
The U.S. Coast Guard's HU-25 Falcon had its last operational flight on September 23, 2014. The final aircraft, based at Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas, was officially retired in a ceremony that marked the end of an era for the service's only jet-powered aircraft. The Falcon had served for 32 years, fulfilling a wide range of missions including search and rescue, law enforcement, and environmental protection.
The HU-25 was a modified version of the Dassault Falcon 20 business jet, known for its speed, which was a critical advantage in its search and rescue role. While its speed was a key asset, it was eventually replaced by the HC-144A Ocean Sentry, a turboprop aircraft that offers greater endurance and loitering capability, as well as more cargo space, which are more suitable for many of the Coast Guard's modern surveillance and maritime patrol missions. Several retired HU-25s have been preserved for display at various air stations, and some were transferred to other government agencies like NASA for research purposes.
