Search and Rescue

The history of Coast Guard search and rescue is a story of evolution from volunteer heroics to a technologically advanced, unified service. Its roots trace back to the U.S. Life-Saving Service, established in 1878 to formalize the heroic, often volunteer-based, efforts of "surfmen" who launched small boats from shore to rescue mariners from shipwrecks. Concurrently, the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service, a maritime law enforcement agency founded in 1790, also unofficially aided distressed vessels as a "Good Samaritan" tradition. In 1915, these two agencies merged to form the modern U.S. Coast Guard, combining their complementary missions. Over the years, the service's capabilities expanded significantly with the advent of new technologies. The 1920s saw the addition of aviation assets, with fixed-wing aircraft enabling over-the-horizon searches. The post-World War II era introduced the helicopter, which revolutionized rescue operations with its ability to hover and hoist people from the sea, a capability far exceeding that of earlier aircraft. Today, the Coast Guard's search and rescue mission is a highly coordinated effort leveraging a global network of satellites, advanced sensors, and a fleet of cutters, boats, and aircraft, allowing them to pinpoint and assist those in distress across vast expanses of the ocean.
