To become a Coast Guard Boatswain's Mate (BM), often referred to as a "turfman" in some traditional naval contexts, you must first successfully enlist in the U.S. Coast Guard and complete recruit basic training. After boot camp, prospective BMs typically attend a highly intensive 14-week BM "A" School at Training Center Yorktown, Virginia, where they become masters of seamanship. This specialized training focuses on core skills like navigation, small boat operations (including becoming a qualified boat crew member), marlinespike seamanship (knots, splicing, etc.), and leadership. A BM is expected to possess high-caliber leadership qualities, physical strength, good vision, and manual dexterity, as they are the operational backbone of nearly every Coast Guard mission, serving as deck supervisors, law enforcement officers, and often holding one of the unique opportunities for enlisted personnel to command small boat stations.
