Headin' to the Bar
The U.S. Coast Guard National Motor Lifeboat School (NMLBS), located in Ilwaco, Washington, is the premier training facility for surfmen—the elite operators of the Coast Guard's powerful and self-righting 47-foot Motor Lifeboat (MLB) . Often called "Surf School," NMLBS is renowned for its challenging environment, providing realistic training in heavy weather and breaking surf. The school teaches advanced boat handling techniques, navigation, and crew resource management, ensuring that Coast Guard boat crews are prepared to conduct search and rescue missions in the most treacherous coastal conditions, embodying the service's motto: "So others may live."
