40th Anniversary of the Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue Swimmer Program
The United States Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue Swimmer program, which celebrates its 40th anniversary, represents a pivotal and heroic capability for maritime rescue. Established following the tragic 1983 sinking of the Marine Electric, Congress mandated the Coast Guard create a program to deploy personnel directly into the water for search and rescue, recognizing the critical need to assist incapacitated survivors. Since its official establishment by the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 1984, these elite Aviation Survival Technicians (ASTs) have become the "last hope for survival" in the most unforgiving conditions, leaping from helicopters to save lives from sinking vessels, cliff faces, and raging storms. Their demanding training and unwavering motto, "So others may live," have cemented their legacy as highly skilled professionals whose bravery and dedication continue to be vital to the Coast Guard's life-saving mission.
