The SBD Dauntless dive-bomber "Black B-1" of Bombing Squadron Six (VB-6), piloted by LT Richard "Dick" Bestwith Chief Radioman James F. Murray as his gunner, played a critical and historic role in the Battle of Midway. On the morning of June 4, 1942, after the rest of his squadron had mistakenly followed the Scouting Six squadron to dive on the carrier Kaga, Best correctly identified the unattacked Japanese flagship carrier Akagi and, with his two wingmen, delivered a devastating dive-bombing attack. Best's single bomb hit caused a fatal explosion in the Akagi's fuel and armed aircraft-laden hangar deck, ultimately leading to the carrier's scuttling. Later that afternoon, Best and Murray flew one of the few remaining aircraft in a strike against the last Japanese carrier, Hiryū, where Best scored another direct hit, becoming the only pilot to score confirmed hits on two Japanese carriers in one day. This incredible achievement came at a personal cost, as Best severely damaged his lungs inhaling caustic soda from a faulty oxygen rebreather during the first mission, ending his combat flying career but securing his place as one of the pivotal heroes of the decisive battle.
